Center of Attention Family Childcare

My Philosophy
Come as you are!

I believe every child deserves a quality start for their lives. The first years of a child’s life are very important and I want to help families lay that great foundation for all of their intellectual and emotional development to follow.  I believe nurturing and individual attention play a key role in developing mature, self confident children. I strive to provide a place where children know that they are accepted, loved, protected and wanted; helping to instill in each child a sense of purpose and self worth. I want them to have a number of positive experiences and interactions throughout the day and I hope that at the end of each day when they leave and go home that they feel proud of themselves and are eager to share what they learned that day with you.  Having a small setting allows me to customize lessons and address specific needs on an ongoing basis.

I feel privileged to have the opportunity to share in their laughter and to be included in their games. This is how I have chosen to spend my days and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I understand how difficult it is to leave your child in someone else’s care every day and I appreciate the trust you put in me every day. My goal is to earn your trust by being professional, dependable, honest and most importantly, caring for your child the same way I would want my child to be cared for.  I am not a babysitter, nanny, nor do I "watch" kids. I view my chosen profession as a career and not just a job because I am first and foremost an educator.

Some of the advantages of a home childcare setting that cares for a mixed age group are:

  • Multi-age groups offer children opportunities to develop and practice social skills.
  • There is a wider range of behavior and performance that is likely to be accepted and tolerated by the adults as well as by the children themselves.
  • There is often less competitive and more cooperative or helpful behaviors.
  • Mixed-age group care is more like a home setting and often a more comfortable and secure setting for young children.
  • Siblings are not separated.
  • By design, mixed-age group care is geared more to the needs of individuals. Children in such groups have greater freedom to develop at their own rate.
  • Older children learn to adapt their language and social skills to relate with younger children, often learning patience, compassion and problem solving skills.
  • Younger children are challenged by older children and often engage in more complex activities then when they play with same age peers.

I provide a daily routine that is flexible, yet structured, to ensure that children feel comfortable with their surroundings and know what to expect. Throughout the day, children’s interactions are carefully monitored, giving me the opportunity to help instill common values within each child. Through sensitivity and understanding I strive to teach each child in my care: manners, kindness, and to be respectful towards others and their belongings. When a child displays inappropriate behavior towards others, he or she is encouraged to make amends through a sincere apology; all in a sustained effort to help teach children the basic understanding of right from wrong. Additionally, sharing, taking turns, problem solving and team work are stressed with equal importance so that children can learn to play harmoniously with each other.

I believe that the discipline of a child is achieved through patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. I believe that leading by example as a childcare provider is very important and my actions and reactions speak much louder than my words. Children are explained the rules on a regular basis so that they know what’s expected from them. I find that in the vast majority of cases when parents and provider communicate well and work well together any behavior issues can be resolved without many complications.
